Academic Summer offers an exciting Explorer programme for students aged 12-14, who study in small groups of 15 students (max).
Our camp is based on the broad IGCSE/GCSE curriculum and covers a wide range of Academic Subjects including English, applied mathematics, sciences, social studies, humanities and art. The medium of instruction is English and you will have 30 hours of inspiring learning per week in Bristol and 25 hours of learning in London. Explorers gain a real insight and excellent preparation for any GCSE, pre IB or equivalent programme. You will learn invaluable study skills to help you in your academic careers whilst being introduced to different styles of learning. You'll be taught by inspiring, qualified subject teachers who have been supported by EFL teachers so they know how to teach students whose first language is not English.
We take a cross-curricular approach to make learning fun and interesting so lessons involve a mixture of theory and practical work. For example, in science you will do some practical experiments in the laboratories which will really bring the theory to life. You will also develop your IT skills, reasearch and study skills as well as learning how to give effective presentations.
International students should have at least B1 level of English on the Common European Framework.

Content Language and Integrated Learning: CLIL
At Academic Summer we embrace Content Language and Integrated Learning - CLIL which has been described as 'a major methodological revolution' in language teaching . CLIL means learning another (content) subject such as physics or geography through English or another Foreign Language, following a more exciting process. In our lessons you will use your knowledge of the subject(s) to create a learning frame which will improve your English. We guarantee you will feel happier due to recognising some of the subject content without needing a full understanding of English. You'll be surprised at how much you understand!
At Academic Summer, English becomes the means of learning content. The focus is on language improvement rather than enforced learning, so you'll build up language competency through using it to explore and discuss curriculum topics, leading to more natural and sophisticated communicative skills over time. You will become academically proficient in a language because CLIL focuses on fluency rather than accuracy, treating errors as a natural part of language learning.
Improving overall and specific language competence.
Preparing for future studies and/or working life.
Developing different interests and attitudes.
Diversifying methods & forms of classroom teaching and learning.
Increasing learner motivation.
Integrating language into the broader curriculum.
Academic language proficiency
Introducing a wider cultural context to content lessons
Conversely, CLIL can increase your motivation to learn the subjects by enabling you to progress more quickly and solidly than you would with deliberately separated subjects. Allowing two subjects to paint a broader picture of reality is a great advantage of Academic Summer's methodology. We make sure that the content-specific subject is the primary objective and that the linguistic goals are secondary – this provides consistency and sturdy scaffolding on which to build linguistic progress.
